Pelicans Demolish Blue Rocks 12-0 in Series-Opener

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (27-14) won their third straight game Friday, dispatching the Wilmington Blue Rocks 12-0 to begin a three-game series at Frawley Stadium. The Birds are 3-1 on the current road trip and have scored 33 runs in their last three games.

Right-hander Alec Asher (4-2) earned the win, hurling six shutout innings with five strikeouts. Asher has turned in five straight quality starts, going at least six innings and allowing three or fewer earned runs in his last five outings. Left-hander John Lamb (2-4) was hit with the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits over six innings.

Leading 4-0, the Pelicans broke the game open in the seventh inning, sending eight men to the plate and scoring three runs on four hits. Drew Robinson doubled in a run during the rally and Rougned Odor contributed an RBI single. The Birds second baseman finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Robinson went 3-for-5.

The Birds roughed up Lamb in the first inning. After an RBI single from Odor, Royce Bolinger hit a three-run home run to straight away leftfield. It was the fourth home run of the season for Bolinger who has hit safely in eight straight games. It is the second longest active hitting streak on the team behind Patrick Cantwell, who extended his streak to nine games with a bunt single in the seventh inning.

Trever Adams added to his league-leading RBI total (32) with a two-run double in the ninth inning. Five runs scored and 10 men came to the plate during the stanza, putting the game out of reach.

The Blue Rocks loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but Asher struck out Daniel Mateo to end the threat. The Blue Rocks also stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the first inning.

Right-hander Joe Van Meter (1 IP) and Randol Rojas (2 IP) combined for three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Pelicans have four shutout wins this season and own the best record in Carolina League. Friday's win is the most lopsided triumph of the season.

The Birds continue a three-game series Saturday night with the Blue Rocks. Right-hander Nick Martinez (4-2, 2.72) will be opposed by right-hander Kyle Smith (2-1, 1.93). First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. EST from Frawley Stadium. Pregame coverage begins at 5:50 on AM 1050 and FM 101.9.

The Pelicans will seek their tenth straight home victory on Tuesday, May 21st when the Carolina Mudcats, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, come to TicketReturn.com Field to begin a three-game series.
