North Little Rock, Arkansas - After allowing 16 runs in his last two starts, Matt Oye had a fantastic bounce-back appearance combining with Kevin Johnson for a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Thursday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. Oye (4-2) dealt seven frames and allowed just two hits and a walk while whiffing six to earn the win, while Johnson tossed two innings for the save (8).
With seven consecutive victories the Travs improve to 22-17 after their first series sweep. NW Arkansas falls for the fifth straight game to a record of 13-25.
The Travs scored both of the game's runs in the first inning off NW Arkansas's Yordano Ventura (3-1), the first runs he'd allowed in 16 innings. C.J. Cron, Robbie Widlansky and Randal Grichuk strung together three doubles for a quick-strike attack then managed just one base hit the rest of the way.
Ventura retired the last 13 batters of his six innings and finished with nine strikeouts.
Only four Naturals batters reached base against Oye and none reached second base. Rey Navarro hit a two-out single in the first inning before Oye retired Mitch Canham on a ground ball to third base. A throwing error by second baseman Taylor Lindsey allowed Yem Prades to reach to begin the second inning, but Oye got Roman Hernandez to ground to Rolando Gomez at shortstop to start a double play. That was the start of a string of 13 batters in a row retired by Oye.
Johnson came in for the eighth inning and retired the side in order. A one-out single in the ninth by Angel Franco was the only blemish against Johnson as he took over the league lead in saves.
The Travs and Springfield Cardinals will begin a four-game series on Friday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. RHP Manny Correa (2-3, 3.69) will pitch for the Travelers against LHP Anthony Ferrara (3-3, 5.08). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
