Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (MAY 16, 2013) - Today the Frisco RoughRiders announced that right-handed pitcher Kyle McClellan has transferred from Triple-A Round Rock to Frisco and has been activated off the 7-day disabled list. The 28-year-old has not pitched this season and is expected to throw tonight for the RoughRiders in relief. Additionally, left-handed pitcher Martin Perez, who was optioned to Frisco on Sunday, has been promoted to Triple-A where he joins the Express and is scheduled to pitch tonight against Colorado Springs.
McClellan, 28, last pitched in 2012 with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Florissant, Missouri native spent his entire career in the Cardinals system before his release in November of last year. He signed a minor league contract with Texas in January and pitched in one spring training game, throwing two scoreless innings, before sustaining an injury to a muscle in his ribcage.
Over his big league career, McClellan has posted a 19-23 record with a 3.69 ERA in 261 appearances. He started 17 games for the Cardinals in 2011, but has otherwise worked as a reliever. In 2010 he was one of the best relievers in the National League with a 2.27 ERA in 68 outings. In 75.1 innings, McClellan surrendered just 58 hits and walked 23. He has not pitched in the minors since 2007 when he was a member of the Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League.
Perez made two rehab starts with the RoughRiders after breaking his left wrist in spring training. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed nine runs (all earned) on 14 hits and one home run with two walks and two strikeouts.
Frisco's roster remains at the Texas League limit of 25 active players.
The RoughRiders complete a series with the Midland RockHounds tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.
