Bakersfield Blaze News Release
A day after the Bakersfield Blaze picked up a thrilling extra-inning win, the Modesto Nuts got a measure of revenge, riding the strong arm of starter Chris Jensen to an easy 5-0 victory over the Blaze on Mother's Day at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.
The game began very quickly, with each starting pitcher trading jabs for four scoreless innings.
On the Blaze side, Jonathan Moscot (L, 0-6) struck out four in the first four frames, while Jensen used an array of grounders and popups to rack up twelve straight outs to begin his day.
The Nuts got on the board in the 5th. Moscot walked Ryan Casteel to start the frame, and Harold Riggins singled; then, with one out, Sam Mende's infield hit loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Juan Crousset gave Modesto the only run they would need. An error later in the frame allowed a second run to come across, as well.
Two innings later, the Nuts tacked on a run that likely should not have been. With two outs, a pop fly into shallow center resulted in four Blaze fielders nearly colliding, the ball landing untouched, and Trevor Story ending up at second base. The next batter, Mende, blooped a single into right, and the Nuts led, 3-0.
The scoring ended in the 9th, when Modesto put together a walk and two-double rally off Blaze reliever Kyle McMyne to score twice and lead, 5-0.
The story of the day, though, was Modesto starter Chris Jensen (W, 1-3), who went eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits and a walk to a Blaze offense that had been showing signs of waking up. Nelson Gonzalez worked a scoreless 9th to polish off Bakersfield on the afternoon.
The tough-luck loss for Moscot prevented the big righty from getting his first win despite going seven innings for the first time this year.
The series with the Nuts concludes Monday night at 7:30pm on Carl's Jr. Dollar Monday, where admission and hot dogs are each just one dollar, while supplies last!
