Asheville Tourists News Release

Asheville, NC--The Asheville Tourists stole nine bases and hit three Home Runs on Saturday night en route to a 12-4 thumping of the Kannapolis Intimidators. Asheville snapped Kannapolis' three-game winning streak and recorded their first victory over the Single-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox this season.

Jonathan Vargas earned his third win of the year by pitching five solid innings. The Tourists lefty ran into some trouble in the third, but worked his way out of the jam without allowing any major damage.

Offensively Asheville ran early and often. All nine of the team's stolen bases came in the first five innings and seven different players had at least one steal. Rosell Herrera clubbed a two-run long ball in part of a five-run second inning for the home team and Derek Jones went deep in the sixth. The final Tourist Home Run came off the bat of Francisco Sosa with the bases loaded in the seventh. It was the first Grand Slam of the season for Asheville.

Patrick Johnson and Rayan Gonzalez worked the final four frames as the game was never in doubt. Juan Ciriaco finished 3-for-4 while Chris O'Dowd, Jones, Herrera, and Sosa all finished with two hits.

Kannapolis' Jean Almanzar had a pair of base hits and Micah Johnson reached base three times as well. Johnson stole his 32nd base of the season in the third inning, but soon after was caught trying to steal third. Some might say that was the turning point since Johnson was a perfect 7- for-7 in stolen bases this series.

The Tourists and the Intimidators wrap up their only series of the season on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05 pm. Asheville will look to earn a series split while Kannapolis will search for their third victory in four games at McCormick Field.
