
Late Rally Falls Short in 3-2 Loss

TRENTON, NJ- Adam Loewen went 2-for-4 with an RBI single but was thrown out at the plate to end the game as the Fisher Cats dropped a 3-2 decision in Trenton on Friday night.
Trailing 3-0 going to the top of the ninth inning, the Fisher Cats rallied, nearly drawing even. Clint Robinson reached on an error and Ryan Schimpf walked. Loewen singled Robinson in for the first run and Sean Ochinko walked to load the bases. John Tolisano walked as Schimpf scored to make it 3-2. With Kevin Pillar at the plate, reliever Aaron Dott threw a pitch in the dirt that rolled to the backstop. Loewen was tagged out by Dott trying to score the tying run.
Trenton (19-16) built the lead with single runs in the third, seventh and eighth inning. Kevin Mahoney led off the bottom of the third inning with a single, advanced to third on a single by Ramon Flores, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Pirela to make it 1-0.
That was the only run allowed by Fisher Cats starter Ryan Tepera (4-2) in five innings of work. He allowed three hits, walked three and struck out five for New Hampshire (16-20).
The second Thunder run came across in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kevin Mahoney reached on a bunt single and went to second when reliever Chorye Spoone threw the ball away. Mahoney took third on a ground out and scored on a single by Tyler Austin.
Reegie Corona walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Nick McCoy's two-out double put the Thunder up 3-0.
Trenton starter Mikey O'Brien (1-0) worked six scoreless innings, allowing four hits. He struck out five. Dott earned his first save.
