New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT- The Rock Cats split a Double-Header with Sea Dogs, losing the opener 6-4 and winning the night-cap 6-0 in front of a sellout crowd 7,194 at New Britain Stadium. Cole De Vries was tagged with the loss in his Major League rehab assignment in the first game. Trevor May pitched a complete game shutout in the second game with a season-high 10 strikeouts. He became the first Rock Cats pitcher to record 10 strikeouts since Kyle Gibson on May 15, 2010.

After losing the first game the Rock Cats created a little two-out magic in the bottom of the second to put the first run on the board. Catcher Dan Rohlfing cracked an RBI double to centerfield to score Josmil Pinto all the way from first base.

New Britain would strike again in the fifth when Jason Christian plated both Jonathan Goncalves and Antoan Richardson on a triple that would hit off the wall in deep centerfield.

Rohlfing continued his hot night with another RBI double in the sixth, scoring Daniel Ortiz. Richardson joined in on the run parade later that inning by going the other way for an RBI single and the top producer of the night, Christian would add another with an RBI single to put the Cats up 6-0.

Meanwhile, May kept the Sea Dogs hitters off balance all night and retired 10 of 12 batters from the first to the 4th innings. He recorded his second win while recording 10 strikeouts in a complete game effort.

In the first game, Portland's Matt Spring belted a long home run in the 4thinning off New Britain righty-Cole DeVries, and the two-run blast proved decisive as the Sea Dogs bested the host Rock Cats, 6-4, in the opener of Friday's late-afternoon doubleheader at New Britain Stadium.

DeVries, a member of Minnesota's Major League roster and in New Britain on a rehab assignment, said his tender right forearm was pain-free after the game. He surrendered a total of 4 hits and 2 earned runs in five full innings of work.

DeVries' opposite, Portland knuckle-baller Charlie Haeger, fluttered in and out of trouble all night, but the 29-year-old hung on to record his first win of 2013. While surrendering just 5 hits, the Sea Dogs' hurler also hit two batters, walked five, and uncorked three wild pitches.

The Rock Cats jumped to an early 2-0 lead when their leadoff batter, Antoan Richardson, was hit by a pitch, stole second and later scored on a Mark Sobolewski sac fly. Later in the same frame, Danny Ortiz' doubled to the left field corner to plate A.J. Petterson.

Portland took the lead in the third inning when Travis Shaw belted a DeVries' pitch far over the right field fence for a 3-Run homer.

New Britain regained the lead, 4-3, by virtue of two walks, a wild pitch, a passed ball and an RBI single by Danny Santana, one of the shortstop's 2 hits on the night.

After Spring's 2-Run HR in the 4th, Haeger and the Sea Dogs' hard-throwing bullpen ace, Chris Martin, combined to shut the Cats down. Martin recorded his third Save of the year and kept his ERA perfect at 0.00.
