Lancaster Stormers News Release
Ryan Harvey spent Thursday night doing what he does best.
The Lancaster right fielder launched two towering home runs, one to right and one to left, leading the Barnstormers to a 5-4 victory over the Long Island Ducks Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
It was the second win in a row for the Barnstormers who had dropped 11 of their previous 12.
Following two-out singles by Travis Denker and Blake Gailen in the bottom of the first, Harvey slammed an opposite field home run beyond the picnic tents for a quick 3-0 lead against lefty Bill Murphy (0-5). Daryle Ward and Olmo Rosario reached on singles as well, but Murphy settled down and breezed through the next 10 Lancaster hitters.
Alan Johnson (1-1) handled the Ducks through the first four innings but found trouble in the fifth. Rian Kiniry singled into right center to open the frame, then sprinted to third on a hit-and-run, perfectly executed by Dan Lyons with one out in the inning. Danny Perales laced a single into left center to score one, and Josh Barfield brought another home with a single to left. Perales was able to advance to third on the Barfield hit, and the Ducks second baseman cruised into second behind the throw.
Lancaster opted to walk the left-handed Adam Bailey intentionally. The ploy worked as Ramon Castro grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Denker doubled home Petey Paramore in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-2 lead, but Johnson entered dangerous waters again in the sixth. Ray Navarrete doubled to right center to start the inning. Joash Brodin filled in first with a walk, and Johnson gave way to Brian Tallet. Lancaster, expecting a bunt, put the rotation play on. Kiniry swinging away, stroked a ground ball at second baseman Kevin Howard, who chased down Brodin for the first out and still had time to snap a quick throw to first to complete the double play. Gabe Suarez ended the inning with a routine grounder to short.
After Harvey's solo blast to left in the bottom of the sixth, the Barnstormers had to hold on again in the seventh. Lyons led off with a rolling single through the left side, and Perales smoked a single into center. Barfield found the alley in right center, driving in both Lyons and Perales. However, as Barfield was making his way toward third with a probable triple, he pulled up halfway with an apparent recurrence of a hamstring injury and became the first out of the inning.
The injury took the fight out of the Ducks. Instead of having the tying run at third with nobody out in the seventh, there was one out and nobody aboard. From there, Lancaster manager Butch Hobson used Tallet and four other relievers to pick up the final eight outs to hold the 5-4 lead. The last of those, Jason Urquidez, notched his first save of the season.
Lancaster will entertain the York Revolution in the first War of the Roses matchup in 2013 on Friday evening at 7:00 with fireworks to follow the game. The Barnstormers will send Will Savage (2-1) to the hill against Revs legend Corey Thurman.
