Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 8, 2013) - The Tampa Yankees salvaged a series split by beating the Fort Myers Miracle 8-1 on Wednesday at Hammond Stadium.
Each team won two games in the four game set with the finale starting at 10:35 a.m. as part of Fort Myers' annual Education Day.
Yankees' pitcher Shane Greene dominated a punchless Miracle lineup. The right hander pitched 8 1/3 innings, striking out 12 and allowing just one run and five hits. Greene struck out the side in the fourth and seventh. At one point between the second and fourth innings he struck out four in a row and six out of seven.
For the second straight game Twins' top prospects Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario were given the day off. Unlike in Tuesday's 4-2 win, the Miracle were not able to muster enough offense to get a victory. Kennys Vargas hit a solo home run and that would be all for Fort Myers.
Miracle starter Matt Summers was roughed up in five innings. He gave up nine hits and six runs in the loss.
The Yankees got on the board in the first on an RBI single by Gary Sanchez. After Vargas tied the game with his fifth homer of the season in the second, Ben Gamel singled in the third and scored on a double by Robert Refsnyder. Later in the inning Anderson Feliz singled to right to bring home Refsnyder for a 3-1 Yankees lead.
Refsnyder and Sanchez padded the lead in the fifth back-to-back RBI hits to make it 5-1. Feliz made it three runs in the inning when his ground out scored Refsnyder.
The Yankees added two more in the ninth to pull away for good.
Gamel, Refsnyder and Sanchez each had three hits apiece for the Yankees. Tampa's offense registered 15 hits which tied for the most given up by Miracle pitching this season. Bradenton also had 15 hits against Fort Myers on April 7.
The Miracle (25-7) will travel across Florida to begin a three-game series with the Jupiter Hammerheads on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Join the Voice of the Miracle Brice Zimmerman for the broadcast on www.miraclebaseball.com starting at 6:20 p.m.
