Clearwater Threshers News Release
JUPITER (Tuesday, May 7)- The Clearwater Threshers rode terrific pitching and aggressive base-running to a 3-0 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals Tuesday night in front of 645 fans at Roger Dean Stadium.
The Threshers (16-15) picked up their third straight win, blanking Palm Beach (15-17) and moving above the .500 mark in the process. The Threshers have won six of their last seven games after dropping three straight to the league-leading Fort Myers Miracle.
Clearwater opened the scoring in the top half of the third inning against Palm Beach starter Tim Cooney (3-3). Shortstop Jose Mojica led off with a single through the left side, and catcher Logan Moore sliced a ball up the left field line for a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Center fielder Kyrell Hudson lofted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Mojica and advancing Moore to third base. Second baseman Carlos Alonso hit a high pop-up that Colin Walsh dropped behind second base, allowing Alonso to reach first safely and Moore to score from third. The runs gave Clearwater a 2-0 lead.
The Threshers added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Lee Stoppelman. Designated hitter Aaron Altherr cracked a one-out single to right field to bring up Kelly Dugan. The right fielder singled to right, and Altherr sprinted to third base. Stephen Piscotty's throw got away from third baseman Danny Stienstra, and the Threshers took advantage. Dugan zipped to second and Altherr raced home on the play to make it 3-0 in favor of Clearwater.
Starter Hoby Milner (4-2) grabbed his fourth straight win with seven shutout innings, allowing eight hits and a walk while fanning six. Ryan O'Sullivan tossed a scoreless inning of relief, walking one and whiffing two. Colton Murray earned his second save with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one and issuing one walk.
Cooney took the hard-luck loss for Palm Beach, allowing two runs (one earned) over seven innings with four hits surrendered and seven strikeouts recorded. Stoppelman gave up an unearned run in two innings, allowing two hits.
The Threshers will seek the sweep Wednesday night behind right-handed starter Perci Garner. Palm Beach will counter with southpaw Kyle Hald. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pre-game show starting at 6:20 on ThreshersBaseball.com.
