Brevard Edged 7-6 in Slugfest with Charlotte

VIERA, Fla. - Lead-off home runs for each team set the tone for an offensive game in which the Charlotte Stone Crabs out-powered the Brevard County Manatees, 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon in front of 4,072 fans at Space Coast Stadium to split the four-game series.

Kes Carter launched the first pitch of the game for the first home run, but the Manatees (17-16) answered back with Brandon Macias starting the bottom of the first with a homer. Cameron Garfield followed suit a few batters later to give the home team a 2-1 lead.

Brevard's advantage was extended in the third inning, when Macias came around to score a RBI single off the bat of Garfield.

Charlotte (10-22) tipped the game back in their favor with a three-run fifth inning. After a ground out to begin the fifth, three straight batters reached with the first two scoring on a Willie Argo triple to make it a 4-3 ballgame.

That lasted only until the next half inning, when Macias doubled and scored to even it out at four runs apiece on a Greg Hopkins double that chased starter Felipe Rivero from the contest.

Macias went 4-for-4 on the day and reached on a walk in his other plate appearance. It was the fourth time in Macias' career and second time this season that he has recorded four hits in a game.

Mike Fiers made the start for the Manatees, going six innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. He did give up six hits for four runs, including the homer to Carter to start the game.

Andre Lamontagne came out of the bullpen in a tie game and surrendered just one hit was in line for the win, when Macias doubled home Lance Roenicke in the fifth to give the Manatees a 5-4 lead.

His potential win was taken away when Richie Shaffer took Kevin Shackelford deep for two runs and a 6-5 lead in the eighth. However, the Manatees were again able to answer back with a run in the home half on a walk, a hit batter and an error followed by Roenicke's RBI groundout. Brevard County though would strand two runners in the scoring position to end the threat.

Entering the ninth, the game was tied at 6-6 until Charlotte catcher Jake DePew hit his team's third homer of the game and fifth overall.

Charlotte's Lenny Linsky worked himself into a jam with runners on first and second with just one out in the bottom of the ninth, but fanned two straight batters to get out of it and earn the victory.

Brevard County will look to get back on track as they open a three-game series with the Tampa Yankees (14-18) beginning on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium.
