August 27, 2016 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Brevard County Manatees News Release

Lake County Captains (27-34, 67-64) vs. Lansing Lugnuts (29-32, 65-66) Saturday - 7:00 p.m. - Classic Park - Broadcast: AM 1330/101.5 FM WINT Games #132 - Home Games #66 - Season Series: 6-6, 6 Games Remaining RHP Micah Miniard (0-2, 4.71 ERA) vs. RHP Josh DeGraaf (5-6, 3.29 ERA)

YESTERDAY: The Captains ended a five-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts in the series opener at Classic Park. Triston McKenzie pitched six shutout innings and gave up just two hits while striking out nine to earn his second straight win. Andrew Calica made his Captains debut with a 4-for-4 night that included a tie-breaking two-run double in the sixth. The Lake County pitching staff set a 2016 single-game high with 16 strikeouts between McKenzie, Leandro Linares and Erick Algarin.

CAPTAINS TOP PROSPECTS: The Captains have two players remaining on their roster who are ranked among the Indians top 30 prospects, according to MLB.com. SS Willi Castro is ranked #15 and RHP Triston McKenzie is ranked #7.

RECORD STREAK: Former Captains C Francisco Mejia just had a 50-game hitting streak snapped on August 14. The first 24 games came with Lake County before his promotion to High-A Lynchburg. Mejia's streak is the longest in professional baseball since 1954 and is tied with the 1922 streak by Otto Pahlman for the fifth-longest all-time (fourth-longest in Minor League history).

PITCHING WINS BALLGAMES: Lake County's starting pitching staff has carried the team in August with a 3.47 ERA (58 ER, 150.1 IP). A large reason for their success has been their ability to throw strikes.

Captains starters have a 5.56 K/BB ratio (139 K, 25 BB) this month. Lake County's relievers, on the other hand, have a 4.16 ERA (39 ER, 84.1 IP) and a 2.42 K/BB ratio (92 K, 38 BB). Twice this month, the Captains' bullpen has relinquished leads of three runs or greater in the sixth inning or later.

CZECH-ING IN: Since taking over the starting catching job full time at the end of June, Martin Cervenka has thrown out 51.3% of baserunners (20-for-39). He has also nabbed 55.0% of baserunners in August (11-for-20). Cervenka's offense has also jumped up since he took over the full-time catching job. After batting .214 in the first half, Cervenka is hitting .295 in the second half. The Captains' backstop turned in his best offensive month in July by batting .290 and has followed it up so far with a .320 August.

THAT WAS CLOSE: Of the 26 games the Captains have played in August, 18 have been decided by three or fewer runs. In those close ballgames, Lake County has gone 9-9. After winning five straight close games from August 15-19, the Captains have lost their last four close games since August 20. Lake County is 2-1 in extra innings games this month and has had two walk-off wins.

SWEPT AWAY: The Bowling Green Hot Rods swept the Captains in a five-game series at Classic Park from August 22-25. Lake County was outscored 35-12 in the series and batted only .204 (31-for-152) compared to Bowling Green's .305 team average (51-for-167). The Captains' pitching staff had an ERA of 6.59 during the series (30 ER, 41 IP), while the Hot Rods held a 2.63 ERA (12 ER, 41 IP).

PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Captains enter today 3.5 games behind Great Lakes for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Division with nine games remaining. The Captains also need to jump over Lansing to catch the last playoff spot. Lake County trails Lansing by 2.0 games and will play the Lugnuts six more times, all at Classic Park. Despite being swept in the five-game series by Bowling Green this week, the Captains only dropped two games in the standings. They entered that series 1.5 games out of the last playoff spot.
