YESTERDAY: The Lake County Captains shutout the Lansing Lugnuts on Sunday night, 3-0. Casey Shane pitched six scoreless innings and allowed just two hits in his final start of the season to earn the win. Andrew Calica hit a two-run homer in the first inning for his first Lake County long ball. Cortland Cox earned the save with scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth.
CAPTAINS TOP PROSPECTS: The Captains have one player remaining on their roster who is ranked among the Indians top 30 prospects, according to MLB.com. RHP Triston McKenzie is ranked #7.
2016 DRAFT: The Captains have two players from the Indians' 2016 draft class. OF Andrew Calica was drafted in the 11th round out of UC Santa Barbara and LHP Ben Krauth was selected in the 16th round out of the University of Kansas.
RECORD STREAK: Former Captains C Francisco Mejia just had a 50-game hitting streak snapped on August 14. The first 24 games came with Lake County before his promotion to High-A Lynchburg.
Mejia's streak is the longest in professional baseball since 1954 and is tied with the 1922 streak by Otto Pahlman for the fifth-longest all-time (fourth-longest in Minor League history).
WINNING MONTH: Lake County finished August at 16-14. It was the Captains' first above-.500 month since they went 15-7 in April. The Captains went 15-15 in May, 13-13 in June and 11-16 in July.
THAT WAS CLOSE: Of the 30 games the Captains played in August, 21 were decided by three or fewer runs. In those close ballgames, Lake County went 12-9.
CZECH-ING IN: Since taking over the starting catching job full time at the end of June, Martin Cervenka has thrown out 48.9% of baserunners (24-for-49). Cervenka's offense has also jumped up since he took over the full-time catching job. After batting .214 in the first half, Cervenka is hitting .293 in the second half. The Captains' backstop turned in his best offensive month in August with a .336 average that included a season-high 12 RBI and a season-best .803 OPS.
TRENDING DOWN: Midwest League offensive numbers have steadily declined over the last several years. In 2010, the Captains' first season in the MWL, the league averaged 4.7 runs per game with 1,363 home runs and a .384 slugging percentage. This season, the MWL has averaged 4.05 runs per game, hit 1,038 home runs and slugged .355. Four different teams hit over 100 homers in 2010. This year, Wisconsin leads the league with 90 home runs. No team has hit 100 homers since 2014.
CHASING 72: The Captains enter the final game of the season with 71 wins, tying their win total from 2012 and 2015. If Lake County wins today, the Captains will have their most victories in a single season since 2010. In their Midwest League championship 2010 season, the Captains won 77 games.
KNOCKED OUT: The Captains have been knocked out of playoff contention in 2016. They last reached the postseason in 2014. Lake County has made the playoffs five times in their 14-year history and three times since joining the Midwest League in 2010.
