YESTERDAY: The Captains saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-0 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Saturday night at Parkview Field. Trevor Foss pitched eight innings and gave up just two runs on a two-run homer by Chris Baker, but that long ball proved enough for the TinCaps. Thomas Dorminy struck out a career-high 10 Captains over seven innings for the win and Lou Distasio took care of the last six outs for the save.
CAPTAINS TOP PROSPECTS: The Captains have two players remaining on their roster who are ranked among the Indians top 30 prospects, according to MLB.com. SS Willi Castro is ranked #15 and RHP Triston McKenzie is ranked #7.
CAPTAINS ALL-STARS: The Captains had four representatives at the 2016 Midwest League All-Star Game: C Francisco Mejia, 2B Tyler Krieger, SS Willi Castro and LHP Tom Pannone. Castro is the only All-Star who remains on the Captains roster. The rest have been promoted to High-A Lynchburg.
RECORD STREAK: Former Captains C Francisco Mejia just had a 50-game hitting streak snapped on August 14. The first 24 games came with Lake County before his promotion to High-A Lynchburg. Mejia's streak is the longest in professional baseball since 1954 and the fifth-longest all-time.
PITCHING WINS BALLGAMES: Lake County's starting pitching staff has carried the team in August with a 3.28 ERA (41 ER, 112.2 IP). A large reason for their success has been their ability to throw strikes.
Captains starters have a 6.0 K/BB ratio (102 K, 17 BB) this month. Lake County's relievers have a 3.57 ERA (25 ER, 63.0 IP) and a 3.17 K/BB ratio (73 K, 23 BB).
SECOND-HALF SURGE: After posting a .182 batting average in the first half, Bobby Ison is hitting .296 in the second half and has a .311 average in August. Ison's batting average has jumped 53 points, from .182 to .235, since the end of the first half.
THAT WAS CLOSE: The Captains have played six consecutive games that have been decided by two or fewer runs. During that stretch, Lake County has gone 5-1 with two walk-off wins and four one-run victories. The Captains have also played 11 straight games decided by three or fewer runs. They have gone 7-4 in that span.
BASEBALL MARATHON: The Captains and West Michigan Whitecaps played a 16-inning game on Wednesday, August 17. The game, which began at 1:01 PM, finally ended after 4:49 of baseball when Jodd Carter hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 16th . Neither team scored for 11 straight innings from the bottom of the fifth until Carter's 16th -inning hit. Lake County's bullpen pitched 11.1 combined scoreless innings. It was the longest game of the season for the Captains in terms of both innings and time played. It was the Whitecaps' longest game in terms of innings and their second-longest in terms of time.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: The Captains enter today 1.5 games behind Lansing for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Division with 16 games remaining. Of those 16 games, 11 are at home and 11 are against teams with sub-.500 records. Lake County will face Lansing seven more times, all at home.
