Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

The Jupiter Hammerheads moved into sole possession of first place in the Florida State League's South Division on Friday night as they defeated the Fort Myers Miracle, 4-3, in a game played at Roger Dean Stadium. Jupiter now leads the second-place St. Lucie Mets by one-half game, and their advantage over the third-place Miracle now stands at two games.

Jupiter grabbed the early lead in the first inning. Jeremias Pineda, who spent some time with the Miracle during the 2014 championship playoffs, led off with a single, and then went to second on another single by Junior Sosa. After a strikeout, Taylor Ard lined a single to center to score Pineda, putting the hosts on top 1-0.

The Miracle tied the score in the third off of Jupiter starter Scott Squier. Alex Perez started the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single to left off the bat of Tanner English.

Jupiter answered quickly to regain the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning. Pineda lined a triple to right field and wound up coming all the way in to score on the same play when Joe Maloney misplayed the ball in right field for an error.

The Hammerheads extended their lead in the fifth. Rony Cabrera doubled to right field to start the inning, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rehiner Cordova, and scored on a throwing error by Miracle third baseman Christian Ibarra. One batter later, Junior Sosa delivered a line single to left to score Cordova, and Jupiter led 4-1.

The Miracle closed the gap in the seventh. Maloney led off with a double, advanced to third on Ibarra's single, and scored on Trey Vavra's ground ball single to center. Ben Holmes then replaced Squier, and one batter later Alex Perez reached on fielder's choice, with Vavra scoring to make the score 4-3. Fort Myers still had runners on first and third with one out, but Holmes was able to get Brad Hartong to ground into a double play to end the inning.

The Miracle threatened again in the eighth as English led off with a triple, his third hit of the game, but he was left stranded at third as a short fly out and two strikeouts ended the inning.

Squier (5-0) earned the win for Jupiter by allowing seven hits and three runs in six innings of work, striking out three. Holmes picked up his second save by pitching three scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out five. Starter Dereck Rodriguez (1-2) took the loss for the Miracle. In seven innings of work, he scattered nine hits and allowed four runs, three earned, while striking out one. There were no walks in the game allowed by either team.

The Miracle (66-64, 32-29) and the Hammerheads (65-64, 34-27) will meet again at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at Roger Dean Stadium in the second game of this three-game series. Sam Clay (1-1) is the probable starter for the Miracle, and he will be opposed by Jupiter's Jorgan Cavanerio (7-11). Fans can listen to the broadcast of the game on www.miraclebaseball.com with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman.
