Scoreless Game Between Mets and Cardinals Suspended

St. Lucie Mets News Release

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Saturday's game between the St. Lucie Mets and Palm Beach Cardinals was suspended due to unplayable field conditions in the middle of the eighth inning. The game is scoreless.

The Mets and Cardinals will resume the game on Sunday at noon and play it through nine innings. Another nine-inning game will follow to complete the series.

Three Mets pitchers kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard through eight innings. Cardinals starter Junior Fernandez only need 73 pitches to pitch seven scoreless innings. He was set to pitch in the eighth before rain washed out the game.

The Mets only mustered two singles off of Fernandez. The 19-year-old Dominican retired 13 straight batters to end his outing.

Both teams had chances to score. The Mets had runners on the corners with one out in the second but Luis Guillorme lined out to short and Michael Katz struck out.

The Cardinals had runners at second and third with one out in the second. Ben Griset got Dylan Tice to pop out and Chris Rivera to ground out on a comebacker.

Palm Beach appeared to take the lead in the seventh. With runners at the corners and one out, Danny Diekroeger grounded to Jonathan Johnson, who flipped to Guillorme at second base for the second out. Guillorme was unable to get a throw off to first base to complete the double play because Thomas Spitz slid into him. That initially allowed a run to score from third base, but the umpires convened and ruled that Spitz slid past the second base bag and interfered with Guillorme. Spitz and Diekroeger were both called out to end the inning and the run was taken off the board.

Ben Griset pitched five innings. He struck out the final four batters he faced. He's now shut out the Cardinals over 16.1 innings this year.

Domingo Tapia pitched two innings and Robert Coles struck out two in a perfect eighth.

Earlier Saturday, Jupiter beat Fort Myers 3-0. Jupiter is now one full game up on the Mets for first place in the FSL South Division.
