Arkansas Travelers News Release
Monday night at Arvest Ballpark the Northwest Arkansas Naturals downed the Arkansas Travelers for a second straight day, by winning the third game of the series 6-1. Yordano Ventura started for the Naturals and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. Ventura fanned 10 Travs batters on way to earning his third victory of the season.
Arkansas starter Manny Correa, who entered the game having allowed just three earned runs in his last 17 innings pitched, struggled out of the gates and allowed six hits in the first two innings.
Northwest Arkansas plated a run in the first and two more in the second to establish a 3-0 lead. Mitch Canham laced an RBI single in the first. In the second, Alex McClure drove in a run with a single before Whit Merrifield hit a sacrifice fly.
Arkansas' best opportunity to erase the three run deficit came in the fourth. With one out, Ventura issued consecutive walks to Matt Long and C.J. Cron. Robbie Widlansky followed with the Travs first hit of the night to load the bases. However, Ventura denied the Travs of scoring when he struck out Randal Grichuk and Kaleb Cowart to end the threat.
The Naturals expanded the lead to four in the fourth with a base hit from Rey Navarro that scored Angel Franco.
Correa settled down after the slow start by pitching scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth. Correa retired five of the last seven Naturals he faced.
The Travs finally got onto the scoreboard in the seventh after hits from Randal Grichuk and Kaleb Cowart. Taylor Lindsey followed by hitting into a fielders choice to score Grichuk.
Northwest Arkansas answered by pushing across a pair in the bottom of the inning to make the score 6-1 with a two-run double by Roman Hernandez off of LH Buddy Boshers.
Andy Ferguson pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Naturals to finish the game.
Robbie Widlansky led the Travs with two hits.
The Travs and Naturals finish the four-game series Tuesday morning at 11:05 a.m. In the finale the Travs send righty Lay Batista to the hill against Naturals southpaw Noel Arguelles. Coverage begins with the Travs Dugout Show at 10:40 a.m. on Sports Animal 920.
