Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers got to within one out of ending their losing streak but could not hold on as the Long Island Ducks rallied for a 5-3 victory Monday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

For the Barnstormers, it was their seventh straight defeat and 10th in their last 11 games.

Yoslan Herrera (0-1), who was brilliant on the opening homestand but slipped on the recent nine-game road trip, was handed the ball for the ninth inning. The right-hander retired Dan Lyons on a grounder to third, then got some help when third baseman Olmo Rosario made a leaping snag of a wicked line drive off the left-handed bat of Danny Perales.

Herrera got ahead of Ray Navarrete in the count, but the former Atlantic League MVP, knocked a single past Rosario's left to keep the game alive for Long Island. Ramon Castro dropped a single to center in front of the "no doubles" defense, chasing pinch runner Rusty Jones to third. Ryan Strieby rolled a single through the hole at shortstop to tie the game. Both runners moved ahead a base on a Herrera wild pitch. Adam Bailey struck out, but the final strike bounced a few feet away from catcher Petey Paramore who slipped and could not get off a throw. Joash Brodin slapped a sharp grounder, which went through first baseman Daryle Ward for an error as two runs crossed the plate.

Leo Rosales got the Barnstormers in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the ninth for his third save.

Lancaster had gotten the better of the long ball barrage earlier in the game. Ryan Harvey lofted his third of the year down the left field line in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. It stayed that way until Josh Barfield reached the hillside in left off Dwayne Pollok in the sixth.

Long Island's Matt Way took the lead into the bottom of the seventh and struck out the first two batters. Paramore reached on an error by third baseman Gabe Suarez before Tsuyoshi Takashima picked up his first Atlantic League hit, a two-run blast toward the line in left, giving Lancaster its 3-2 lead.

The two clubs meet again on Tuesday morning at 11:00 on Baseball in Education Day at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Right-hander Jay Buente (1-1) will make the start for the Barnstormers. The Ducks will send former Major League All-Star Dontrelle Willis (0-1) to the hill. The game may be heard on 1600-AM, WPDC, beginning with the Dugout Report at 10:45.

NOTES: Harvey's home run extended his hitting streak to seven games...He also had a double and made a great throw in the sixth inning to nab Brodin sliding into second...Pollok set a new season-high by a Barnstormers pitcher with eight strikeouts...Jerry Owens failed to reach base for the first time in 10 games...Lancaster was held to five or fewer hits for the sixth time.
