Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO, CA (May 4th, 2013) -- In a quick game that took on only two hours and 12 minutes, the Nuts were able to win their second straight against the Blaze, with a 3-2 win on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.

Nuts starter Dan Winkler (3-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and went on to allow only two hits and an earned run for his third win of the year.

Modesto held a 3-0 lead until the latter half of the game when the Blaze scratched single runs in the sixth and seventh, but the Nuts bullpen held on strong at the end to give the team their first set of consecutive wins since April 16th-18th.

Sam Mende and Brian Humphries opened the first inning with a pair of singles against Blaze starter Carols Contreras (1-3), who brought home the first run of the game on a balk. Contreras would cruise through the next two innings until allowing a walk and a two-run homer to Tyler Massey in the fourth that put Modesto ahead 3-0. Even though he took the loss, Contreras gave up just three hits and struck out seven in six innings of work.

After sending down the first 10 batters of the game, Winkler put Kyle Waldrop on via walk, but quickly erased that by inducing a 4-6-3 double play. After issuing a one-out walk in the sixth, Blaze catcher Chris Berset singled to end Winkler's no-hit bid. Juan Perez followed with a sac-fly to get Bakersfield on the board.

Winkler left in the seventh after a man reached on an error and a single, but reliever Leuris Gomez came on and got a double play from Juan Duran to slow the Blaze attack. Modesto traded a pair of outs on the Duran grounder, while allowing Marquez Smith to score which made it 3-2.

Gomez worked around a one-out single for a scoreless eighth, racking up two strikeouts, and Scott Oberg struck out the side in the ninth for his second save in as many nights. He now has seven on the season.

Modesto will now go for the series win against the Blaze on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. RHP Tyler Gagnon (1-2, 7.36) will get the start for Modesto, opposite RHP Jake Johnson (2-1, 8.02) for the Blaze.
