Hagerstown Suns News Release
AUGUSTA, G.A. - The Hagerstown Suns (14-11) scored all five of their runs on Wednesday night in the top of the first, hanging on for a 5-3 win over the Augusta GreenJackets (16-9) in game one of a three game series. The win gives the Suns their second three-game winning streak of the season.
Second baseman Tony Renda led off the top of the first by drawing a walk, one of three walks issued in the inning by Augusta starter RHP Justin Schumer (0-2). Following a fly out and a ground out that allowed Renda to advance to second, 1B Shawn Pleffner drove Renda in with a line drive single to left. Right fielder Brandon Miller and CF Will Piwnica-Worms both walked to load the bases, and then LF Wes Schill delivered the biggest hit of the night, driving a bases-clearing double to left to make it 4-0. Schill scored from third two batters later when SS Stephen Perez singled to left.
The GreenJackets got one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame. Center fielder Jesus Gallindo and SS Matt Duffy both walked to begin the inning. Designated hitter Shayne Houck then grounded into a double play, which eliminated Duffy from the base path but allowed Gallindo to move to third. Gallindo proceeded to score from third on a wild pitch.
Augusta made it a three-run game in the third. Duffy was walked with two outs and with Houck at the plate he stole second. A throwing error by Suns catcher Pedro Severino allowed Duffy to move to third, and he scored when Houck reached on a fielding error by Schill. The final GreenJackets run scored an inning later thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of RF Charles Jones.
It was Hagerstown starting RHP Ronald Pena (2-2) who earned the win. He pitched for five innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on three hits while walking six and striking out three. Schumer suffered the loss for Augusta in his first start of the year. He lasted just 0.2 innings, giving up all five earned runs on three hits and three walks. RHP Christopher McKenzie and RHP Brian Rauh each pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Suns, with McKenzie getting credit for the hold and Rauh getting credit for his second save this season.
The Suns and GreenJackets continue their three game series on Thursday May 2. Hagerstown will send RHP Pedro Encarnacion (1-1) to the mound for his fifth start of the season. He will square off against RHP Chris Stratton (2-1) for the GreenJackets. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
