Modesto Nuts News Release
SAN JOSE, CA (April 24th, 2013) -- The Giants jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 10-5 win over Modesto on Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium.
Angel Villalona and Devin Harris both clubbed 3-run homers in the contest to lead the Giants attack. With two outs in the first, Harris got San Jose on the board against Nuts starter Tyler Gagnon with a double, and Villalona followed with a big homer to left-center to stake the Giants to a 4-0 lead.
Gagnon would settle in with three scoreless innings until the Giants added four more against him with two outs in the fifth. An RBI single by Mac Williamson kept the inning alive, with Harris hitting a 3-run homer to put San Jose on top 8-1. Gagnon (1-1) was charged for eight earned runs on eight hits in his first loss of the year.
Giants starter Edwin Escobar frustrated Modesto early in the game, striking out nine in 4 1/3 innings. He left in the fifth due to pitch count limitations, making him ineligible for the win. Escobar left with two in scoring position in the fifth, with reliever Carlos Teller giving up the first run of the game on a wild pitch that allowed Featherston to score from third. Modesto added a run against Teller in the sixth on a sac-fly by Tim Smalling to make it 8-2.
Luis Rojas (1-1) picked up the win by scorer's decision after tossing two shutout frames in relief of Teller.
Modesto rallied for three runs in the ninth against Drew Bowlin, as Juan Crousset notched an RBI single and Smalling drove in a pair of runs with a single to make it 10-5. Bowlin, who struck out the side in the ninth, put away Taylor Featherston via strikes to finish off the game.
The Nuts struck out a season-high 19 times in the contest. Featherston and Harold Riggins both struck out five times.
With the series now tied 1-1, the Nuts (9-11) return to San Jose (14-6) on Thursday to wrap the three-game set. The two clubs will then face off in a three-game series in Modesto starting on Friday. First pitch tomorrow is set for 7 p.m., with LHP Tyler Anderson (0-0, 3.18) set to pitch for Modesto, opposite LHP Ty Blach (2-1, 1.59) for the Giants.
