Bakersfield Blaze News Release

With a windy Wednesday in the rear view, more normal baseball prevailed on Thursday night, ...

The pitchers came out of the gates looking strong, turning in two quick scoreless innings before the Blaze got on the board in the 3rd.

Juan Silverio extended his team-high hitting streak to 11 games with a leadoff double, and one out later, catcher Chris Berset doubled him in, putting Bakersfield up 1-0.

The Mavs have made a habit of keeping the Blaze from enjoying leads, and the 3rd inning tonight was no different, as High Desert tied it back up on back-to-back doubles of their own.

The back-and-forth continued in the very next frame, as Marquez Smith sliced a homer over the wall in rightfield, a solo shot, to put the Blaze back up, 2-1.

In the bottom of the inning, though, the Mavs countered the Blaze jabs with a roundhouse, batting around, scoring five times, and taking a 6-2 lead, and ending the night for Blaze starter Tanner Robles (L, 0-4). In the three game series, the Mavericks have scored 14 runs in the 4th inning. High Desert added another in the 5th off Pat Doyle on a Michael McGee solo shot to go up 7-2 in the middle frames.

Meanwhile, after a slow start, Trevor Miller (W, 1-3) settled down for the Mavs, and pitched through the 6th, allowing just one additional run on a Kyle Waldrop solo homer, and Miller departed with a 7-3 advantage.

The Mavs weren't finished, adding two more in the 7th off Doyle, but the Blaze defense turned its fourth double play of the night to stem the tide, and keep the Mavs from running away.

But six was enough, as the Mavs pen worked the final three scoreless frames to wrap up a series sweep and deal the Blaze their 5th consecutive loss.

The loss drops the Blaze to 5-16 on the season, and the team ends the road trip 2-5. With home cooking on the horizon, the Blaze will welcome the Rawhide to Sam Lynn Ballpark over the weekend.
