March 5, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Pickard made 25 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season while David van der Gulik scored the game-winner, as the Lake Erie Monsters handed the Peoria Rivermen a 2-0 loss Tuesday night at Quicken Loans Arena. The two teams will meet again on Thursday in the second game of Peoria's season-long six-game road trip.
The first period featured no goals but did include two fights for Chris Bruton in the game's first 11 minutes. Bruton fought John Negrin just 2:29 into the game, and Daniel Maggio at the 10:57 mark of the period.
The Monsters took a 1-0 lead midway through the second period thanks to the goal by van der Gulik. Mike Sgarbossa took a shot from the top of the left circle that deflected off of the glove of van der Gulik, and over the shoulder of Jake Allen. Luke Walker also assisted on the goal scored at 11:48 of the second.
Brian Sutherby scored his first goal of the season at 6:47 of the third period to extend Lake Erie's lead to 2-0. Tyler McNeely made a cross-ice pass to Sutherby who one-handed the puck into the net. Maggio earned the secondary assist on the tally.
The Rivermen outshot the Monsters 25-21 tonight. Peoria went 0-for-4 on the power play while Lake Erie went 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
The Rivermen will remain in Lake Erie for another match against the Monsters on Thursday at 6 p.m. All games can be heard locally on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
