Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (50-9-1-2) won their 50th game of the season with a 6-2 victory Friday in Prince George over the Cougars (18-35-2-6).
It was also the 25th road win of the season, setting a new franchise record, with six away games to go. The Hawks now have 103 points on the season.
Portland opened the game with a dominating first period, outshooting Prince George 19-7 and forcing four penalties. They opened the scoring on a power play 5:43 into the game when Nic Petan scored his league-leading 43rd goal of the season. They took advantage of another man advantage at the 12:45 mark on a goal by Troy Rutkowski, then got a goal from Taylor Leier at the 18:53 mark to make it 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Prince George got on the board 9:54 into the second on a power play goal by Zach Pochiro to make it 3-1, but the Hawks got that one back on a shorthanded breakaway goal by Ty Rattie at the 15:19 mark. Later in the frame Seth Jones wired a shot from the left faceoff circle past Cougars goaltender Mac Engel to make it 5-1 after two periods.
Rattie scored his second of the game 9:19 into the third, and the Cougars' Troy Bourke rounded out the scoring at the 13:11 mark as Portland finished with the 6-2 win.
Brendan Burke picked up the win in net for Portland with 24 saves on 26 shots. Engel took the loss with six goals allowed on 43 Portland shots.
Along with his two goals, Rattie added an assist to finish with three points. Jones, Petan, Leier and Brendan Leipsic all finished with two points in the win.
The Hawks and Cougars meet again tomorrow at 7 p.m.
