Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID (2/4/13) - The Idaho Steelheads, in conjunction with the ECHL, announced Monday that forward Austin Fyten has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Rookie of the Month for January.
Fyten, 21, tallied 17 points in 12 games and also represented the Steelheads in the 2013 ECHL All Star Game on January 23. Idaho was 7-4-1 during January as the team maintained its hold on third place in the ECHL's Western Conference.
The Sundre, Alberta, product chipped in at least one point in 11 of the 12 games and ended the month on a seven-game point streak. He had three points (two goals, one assist) in a 6-2 win over Alaska on January 18 and had two points three other times. He scored a goal and assisted on the game-winning, overtime goal to beat Gwinnett, 6-5, on January 27 before he was loaned by Idaho to Texas of the American Hockey League.
Despite missing last week's games while in the AHL, Fyten is second among ECHL rookies in scoring (40 points) and assists (26). He's also tied for second among first-year players with a plus-17 rating.
Fyten is the second Steelhead to win Rookie of the Month honors this season. Goaltender Josh Robinson earned the award in November.
