K-Wings Ring In The New Year With Victory Over The Cyclones

December 31, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI - In a game that featured two of the ECHL's top premiere goaltenders Joel Martin (30 saves) and the Kalamazoo Wings (13-15-2-1) out-dueled the Brian Foster (34 saves) and the North Division leading Cincinnati Cyclones 3-2 during the 11th Annual New Year's Eve Bash, presented by COOL 101 and WWMT.

Dictating the play in a majority of the first period by outshooting Cincinnati 17-7, Kalamazoo took a 1-0 advantage midway in the period, when Alexandre Mallet floated a shot off the glove of Cincinnati's Foster and into the net.

Late in the period, three seconds following their lone power-play in the first, Cincinnati tied the game when an Anthony Luciani slap shot hit off the end wall right to the stick of Garrett Wilson for this team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Despite a combined five power-play chances, neither team was able to score in the second period. Cincinnati went 0-for-3 with a man-advantage in the period, including a four straight minutes of power-play time due to a double high-sticking minor from Aaron Clarke.

Josh Shalla (13th) claimed the lead for the Cyclones early in the third period with a redirected marker, tying him with Wilson for Cincinnati's team-lead in goals.

Just like they did two nights before, the K-Wings would strike for two goals in under a minute, this needing just 41 seconds to secure the victory.

Cycling the puck on the power-play, Eric Kattelus notched his personal-best for goals in a season with his 11th that went off the crossbar and in to tie the game at 2-2. Sam Ftorek, who assisted on the goal, earned his 600th career point on the tally.

Creating a turnover in the neutral zone, Clarke raced up and sent a slap shot over the head of Foster that hit the end zone glass and flung back off the goaltender and in for the eventual game-winner. The goal was Clarke's team-leading 12th of the season and extended his point streak to five games.
