Spitfires Come Back over Hounds in Trip OpenerDecember 7, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Soo Greyhounds Press Release
Entering the contest the West Division clubs sat tied with 28 points respectively, and the Hounds searching for their first win of the year with the Spits.
An opening minute powerplay and 2-on-1 rush with NICK COUSINS and ANDREW FRITSCH tested the Spits early in the contest to no avail.
It would be SERGEY TOLCHINSKY opening the scoring at the 7:03 mark. Following up on a RYAN SPROUL point shot, Tolchinsky netted the rebound past Jaroslav Pavelka and a 1-0 lead. The goal for Tolchinsky was his 12th of the year tying JARED MCCANN for the most goals on the season for the Hounds.
TOLCHINKSY continued his strong play later in the period after winning two battles down low before placing a shot off the left post.
Less than five minutes in the period MATT MURRAY flashed the glove hand on Michael Clarke who was all alone in front to keep the one goal cushion after twenty minutes.
RYAN SPROUL broke up a potential breakaway by Josh Ho-Sang less than two minutes into the second period and then Kerby Rychel's low drive was stopped by Murray on a breakaway to hold the Greyhound lead.
ANDREW FRITSCH would leave the game for the Hounds with an undisclosed injury and did not return.
MICHAEL SCHUMACHER increased the Hounds lead 7:49 into the period skating up the right wing, to the low circle before firing a shot high blocker side on Pavelka for his 10th of the year.
Now with a two-goal cushion RYAN SPROUL found iron while the Hounds continued to pressure.
While shorthanded NICK COUSINS shot saw BRANDON ALDERSON put the rebound off a body and into the corner as they continued to press for the larger lead.
Ben Johnson cut the lead just over the midway point of the period after a crafty spin-around backhand by Ho-Sang found the Spitfire centreman for his 5th of the year.
The game would be tied in the periods final minute while Windsor enjoyed their third and final powerplay of the game.
Brady Vail's right point shot found a way through from the right point and the teams skated even after two periods.
The two teams would trade off opportunities through majority of the third period, a period in which saw each team register ten shots on goal.
With less than five minutes to play Kerby Rychel banged home a rebound to give Windsor their first lead of the game, 3-2 over the Hounds.
Despite pulling their goalie with over a minute and half to go the Hounds couldn't pull back on even terms with Windsor as they dropped their second straight one goal contest.
With the loss the Hounds fell to 13-15-2-0 on the year, good for 28 points.
