(Trenton, NJ) - Three New Britain pitchers combined on a five-hitter as the Rock Cats bested the Trenton Thunder, 3-1, Wednesday night in front of 4,965 fans at Waterfront Park. Reading lost to Binghamton, however, meaning Trenton (77-60) remained 4.0 games ahead of the Phillies for the Eastern Division lead and the Thunder's magic number to clinch the division fell to two.

Rock Cats starter Logan Darnell (10-12) shut out Trenton on three hits in his six innings of work. David Bromberg allowed a run in the seventh inning, then closer Bruce Pugh retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth to finish his eighth save.

New Britain opened the scoring in the fourth inning against Thunder starter Mikey O'Brien (5-7) as the first three Rock Cats batters reached base. Chris Colabello began the inning with a single and Rene Tosoni followed with a double. Deibinson Romero's RBI double made the score 1-0, while two batters later Tosoni scored on an Estarlin De Los Santos groundout.

The Thunder threatened for a big inning in the seventh when the first four batters reached against Bromberg. Adonis Garcia's bases loaded single brought Trenton within 3-1 and left three on with still no one out. But Bromberg retired J.R. Murphy on a fielder's choice, then got David Adams and Zoilo Almonte on strikes to escape further damage.

The teams conclude the four-game series on Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Trenton left-hander Shaeffer Hall (9-9, 3.56) is expected to start against Rock Cats righty B.J. Hermsen (10-5, 3.16). Limited tickets are available by contacting the Thunder box office at 609-394-3300 or online at www.trentonthunder.com. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.
