LHP Darin Gorski (8-7, 3.81) vs. LHP Drake Britton (4-5, 3.60)
Game #133 - Saturday, August 25, 2012
Hadlock Field - Portland, ME - 6:00 PM
LAST GAME: Wilmer Flores' two-run homer in the ninth inning was not enough as the Binghamton Mets' comeback bid fell a run short in a 4-3 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs last night at Hadlock Field. Sea Dogs Brandon Workmanbaffled the B-Mets over seven innings, allowing just one run en route to his third win in three starts. Gonzalez Germen suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on a season-high nine hits over 7-2/3 innings. With Portland leading by one in the eighth, Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaertslaunched back-to-back homers to add much-needed insurance. The B-Mets got the tying run on base after Flores home run against reliever Caleb Clay in the ninth, but Jefry Marte struck out looking to end the game.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Darin Gorski (8-7, 3.81) makes his 23rd start of the season and fifth against the Sea Dogs. The southpaw took the loss in his last start against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on August 20, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over seven innings. He struck out a season-high nine, but got just two runs of support in the defeat. In four starts versus Portland, the Pennsylvania native has gone 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA, most recently beating them with six strong innings on July. Over 20-1/3 innings, he has held the Sea Dogs to a .159 batting average.
LHP Drake Britton (4-5, 3.60) takes the mound for his 15th start as a Sea Dog and second against the B-Mets. The southpaw took a no-decision in his last start against the New Britain Rock Cats on August 20. He allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings and exited with a chance to win, but the bullpen failed to hold the lead in a game the Sea Dogs would eventually win in ten innings. Britton lost to the B-Mets back on July 27, allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings. Britton started the season with the Salem Red Sox (High-A), going 3-5 with a 5.80 ERA in 10 games (eight starts). He was promoted to the Sea Dogs in early June. Selected by the Red Sox in the 23rd round of the 2007 draft out of Tomball HS (TX), the Texan underwent Tommy John surgery in 2008.
KEEPING THE STREAK ALIVE: Wilmer Flores extended his hitting streak to five games with his two-run homer in the ninth inning last night. He has gone 8-for-18 during the streak with four doubles, two homers and five RBI. Flores has raised his batting average above .300 for the first time since July 23. Flores has batted .338 in August over 21 games.
THE POWER'S BACK: After suffering through their fourth six-game homerless streak of the season, the B-Mets have hit at least one longball in each of their last three games.
STUMBLING AS OF LATE: The B-Mets dropped their second straight game last night and have lost eight of their last 13 games, falling to six games under .500.
THREE TIMES AS NICE: Pedro Zapata roped a triple down the right field line and scored Binghamton's first run in the sixth inning last night. It was his sixth of the season, tying him for the team lead with Juan Lagares. It was Zapata's first triple since June 5, a span of 37 games without a three-bagger.
THIEVING TO THE TEAM LEAD: Juan Lagares stole his team-leading 21st stolen base of the season last night. It is the highest total with one team in his career and second-most in one season. He stole 25 bases between the Savannah Sand Gnats (Low-A) and St. Lucie Mets (High-A) in 2010.
STEADY DIET OF STRIKES: The B-Mets failed to earn a walk last night for the first time in a nine-inning game since they beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-1 on July 5. Brandon Workman went seven innings in last night's game, throwing 65 of his 80 pitches for strikes. Caleb Clay tossed the final two frames, getting 24 of his 30 pitches in for strikes.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets conclude their season series against the Sea Dogs tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM. RHP Greg Peavey takes the ball in the finale against RHP Jeremy Kehrt.
