Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves missed out on a plethora of scoring opportunities on Saturday night at First Energy Stadium as they dropped the third game of a four-game series to the Phillies 2-1.

Reading jumped ahead in the bottom of the second inning with two outs against Erie starter Patrick Cooper. Leandro Castro connected on a solo home run to left, his 10th, for a 1-0 Reading lead.

The SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the fifth against Reading starter Austin Hyatt. With one out, Corey Jones and James McCann connected on back-to-back singles putting runners on the corners. Jamie Johnson sent a dribbler passed the mound, plating Jones on the infield single, making it a 1-1 game.

The Phillies quickly responded in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Tyson Gillies and Cody Asche each singled putting two on for Darin Ruf. Ruf singled home Gillies for a 2-1 Reading lead.

The SeaWolves could never rebound the remainder of the game. Erie had runners in scoring position in the seventh through ninth innings, including the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, but could not plate any additional runs.

Cooper (3-9) fell victim to a lack of run support allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts in six innings of work.

The SeaWolves will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday night at First Energy Stadium at 6:05. Lefty Ramon Garcia (8-9, 4.03 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Brody Colvin (1-2, 9.25 ERA).
