Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (38-26) gave up a run in the top of ninth to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (28-35) on Friday, and could not find an answer in the bottom of the frame, losing 3-2 in front of 1,066 at Falcon Park. The Scrappers now lead the season series three games to two.
It was CF Aaron Siliga who scored the winning run for Mahoning Valley. He reached base on a walk to leadoff the inning, and was driven home from first on a two-out double by 3B Joe Sever. Sever finished the game with two hits and two walks.
Auburn had tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Catcher Craig Manuel lead off the inning with a ground ball single up the middle. He advanced to second on a throwing error by Scrappers 2B Robel Garcia. Manuel moved to third on a sacrifice bunt laid down by LF Mike McQuillan, at which time Estarlin Martinez entered the game to pinch run for Manuel. Martinez scored when 1B Shawn Pleffner hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Mahoning Valley broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth. It was another leadoff walk which cost the Doubledays, this time issued to Sever. Sever moved from first to third on a single to right by catcher Richard Stock. Sever then scored on a bunt back to the pitchers mound by 1B Eric Gonzalez.
Each team picked up its first run in the third inning. In the top of the frame back-to-back walks to SS Dorssys Paulino and Sever put two aboard with one out. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, and Paulino scored when Gonzalez hit an infield single to short. In the bottom of the frame Auburn answered by scoring on a wild pitch. The run was scored by 2B Tony Renda, who had hit an infield single to third to begin the inning.
LHP Elliott Waterman (2-1) gave up the run in the ninth for the Doubledays, thus taking the loss. LHP Blake Monar had gotten the start and went four innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out five. RHP Will Hudgins was the only other player to pitch for Auburn, throwing four scoreless innings in his Doubledays debut. RHP Josh Martin (4-1) earned the win for Mahoning Valley by pitching the eighth and ninth without allowing a hit.
The Doubledays continue their series against the Scrappers on Saturday August 25. Auburn will send RHP David Fischer (3-3) to the mound for his seventh start of the summer. He will match up against LHP Ryan Merritt (3-4) for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. There will be fireworks following the game and Syracuse University men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim will be at Falcon Park as well.
