Sweeney spearheads Loons' 8-3 win over Lugs

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (26-34, 60-70) scored seven runs in the first three innings behind four hits from Darnell Sweeney in the Lansing Lugnuts (30-28, 77-50) 8-3 loss on Friday night at Dow Diamond.

With the loss, Lansing will have to wait another day to try and tie the franchise single-season record for wins.

Lugnuts starter Blake McFarland (Loss, 5-5) lasted just three innings and allowed seven runs. He surrendered four runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run homer hit by O'Koyea Dickson. Joe Winker delivered a two-RBI single in the second inning off McFarland and Jesse Bosnik recorded an RBI single in the third.

Darnell Sweeney scored three times, hit two doubles and a triple. Sweeney was a home run shy of the cycle.

The Loons received a fine starter from righty Gustavo Gomez (Win, 8-8) who gave up just two runs, allowed three hits and walked one while striking out four in six innings of work.

The Lugnuts used just one arm out of the bullpen on Friday night. Righty Kramer Champlin tossed a career-high five innings, allowed four hits and one run, while striking out three and walking none.

Lansing's offense was led by newcomer Jason Leblebijian who delivered two hits in four at-bats in addition to a walk. Aaron Munoz added an RBI single and walked once.

The Lugs return home to Cooley Law School Stadium for Lugnut Charities Night on Saturday, August 25th, opening a four-game series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Lansing will start Aaron Sanchez (8-3, 2.27). The TinCaps will have Erik Cabrera (0-2, 5.27) on the mound. LAFCU fireworks will follow the game.
