Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Barons rallied to score four runs over the final two innings Wednesday, picking up their 3,000th franchise win in the modern Southern League era in a 4-2 victory over the Tennessee Smokies in front of 1,336 fans at Regions Park.
The Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the third on back-to-back doubles by Michael Burgess and Chad Noble against Barons starter Nestor Molina. The Smokies would tack on another run in the sixth as Matthew Szczur led off the inning with a double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Logan Watkins and scored a batter later on an RBI single by Justin Bour. The RBI was Bour's Southern League leading 102nd of the season.
The Barons would get a run back in the seventh as Brady Shoemaker led off with a single and went to second when Seth Loman was hit by a pitch. Eric Morrison would then lay down a perfect sacrifice bunt down third base line that pitcher Nick Struck fielded and threw wildly past first base allowing Shoemaker to score. Brian Schlitter would relieve and proceeded to strike out the side, stranding runners at second and third. Struck allowed one run (0 earned) on five hits over 6.0 innings while striking out six.
The Barons would come back to tie the game at 2-2 in the eighth as Carlos Sanchez led off the inning with a double and scored on an opposite field bloop single by Trayce Thompson. Loman would give the Barons their first lead on a triple to the wall in left center as Thompson scored easily from third. Loman would score to make it 4-2 when left fielder Rubi Silva dropped an easy fly ball off the bat of Eric Morrison.
The win went to Brandon Kloess (3-3, 3.18) who retired the final six batters of the game in his first appearance since rejoining the Barons on Tuesday. The loss went to Brian Schlitter (2-4, 4.02) who allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in 1.2 innings. With the win the Barons improved to 56-65 and 26-26 in the second half while the Smokies fell to 59-63 and 24-28 in the second half.
The Barons will look to make it two in a row over the Smokies Thursday night as LHP Spencer Arroyo (6-2, 4.15) takes the hill against LHP Eric Jokisch (7-2, 3.02). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
