Mississippi Braves News Release
Jackson, TN - The Mississippi Braves and Jackson Generals split a series-opening doubleheader on Tuesday night at Pringles Park. The Braves took game one 4-2, while the Generals won 4-3 on a walk-off single by Chih-Hsien Chiang in game two.
Mississippi (23-28; 53-68) won game one in large part thanks to a season-high four errors committed by the Generals (27-24; 69-52). In the third, the Braves scored two unearned runs off of starter James Paxton thanks to two errors, including a pitcher's fielding error, and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Stevens. The Braves doubled their lead in the fourth when Matt Kennelly drove in a run with his double and the Generals committed two more errors.
Brent Leach earned his first win of the season after pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing just a run on four hits. Paxton took his fourth loss, while Mike Tarsi picked up his first save of the season.
Game two started out in fine fashion when Todd Cunningham hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the third off of Anthony Fernandez. But the Generals came back with a run in the bottom of the third when Jose Lugo walked Rich Poythress with the bases loaded. Johermyn Chavez then homered, his sixth, to tie the game 2-2 in the fourth.
Jackson took a 3-2 lead when Jesus Sucre hit an RBI single against his former team to score Chiang in the sixth. Mississippi came back in the seventh when, down to their final strike with bases loaded and two out in the seventh, Logan Bawcom threw a wild pitch to score Alden Carrithers and tie the game.
That set up Chiang's heroics in the seventh, as he hit a 1-1 Mark Lamm pitch to the warning track in right-center to give the Generals the doubleheader split.
Lamm took the loss, his sixth. Bawcom blew his third save but picked up his fifth win of the year.
The Braves and Generals square off in game three of the six-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 PM CT. David Hale (6-4, 4.24) takes on left-hander James Gillheeney (0-0, 3.86). Fans can listen live on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com beginning at 6:30 PM CT with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch."
