York Revolution News Release
Chris Waters turned in one of his finest performances of the season, but the Long Island Ducks used a big eighth inning to put the game away, defeating the York Revolution 7-2 in front of 5,252 fans at Bethpage Ballpark. York's lead in the wild card race over Somerset shrinks to one game, as the Revs travel to Somerset to open a three-game series on Monday night.
York scored the game's first run, as Andres Perez lined an RBI single to right-center in the first inning. It was the third of three consecutive hits for the York offense, but Ducks starter Chris Hayes settled in to retire the next eight consecutive batters.
Long Island tied the score in the second, as Dan Lyons singled to left with two outs, and Joash Brodin scored on an error by left fielder Brandon Haveman.
Ray Navarrete cracked a two-run homer to left in the third on Waters' only mistake of the day, putting the Ducks ahead 3-1.
York answered with a fourth-inning run on a sacrifice fly to right by Chris Nowak, his 22nd RBI in his last 19 games, but the out began a stretch where Hayes retired 11 of his final 12 batters faced, including each of his last eight, as the Revs did not manage another hit until the ninth inning.
Waters (2-5) went a season-high seven innings, allowing just three runs (two earned), and walking only one while striking out five. He allowed eight hits, but only one over his final three innings of work.
Long Island put the game out of reach scoring four times in the eighth off reliever Yunior Novoa. With the bases loaded and no outs, Brodin landed the first blow with a two-run single off Novoa's leg and into left field. Kraig Binick followed with an RBI single to left off of a fake bunt, and Dan Lyons capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center.
Hayes (2-3) earned the win, giving up just two runs on five hits in seven innings. He is now 2-0 in four appearances with Long Island, having allowed just three runs in 23.0 innings for the Ducks.
The Revs fall to 2-4 on their current road trip, and are now 5-8 against the Ducks this season, finishing the season series at Bethpage Ballpark with a 4-6 record.
York 's Chris Cody (7-11, 4.76) faces Somerset's Jon Kibler (0-0, 3.78) in Monday's opener at Somerset at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350 and Shoutcast.com (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:45 p.m.
