Barons Walk-Off Again against Mobile

August 7, 2012 - Southern League (SL) Birmingham Barons

Birmingham, AL - In a series that had already seen two walk-off wins, the Barons came through with a third dose of Magic City excitement Tuesday night defeating the Mobile BayBears 2-1 on a walk-off single by Eric Morrison in the ninth in front of 1,792 fans at Regions Park.

The Barons were held scoreless through the first eight innings as Nick McCully and David Holmberg engaged it a fierce pitchers duel. Matt Davidson would break a scoreless tie in the sixth with a leadoff solo home run off of McCully, his 20th long ball of the season. The run would be the only blemish for McCully who surrendered just four hits over 6.0 innings while striking out five.

The Barons managed only three hits through the first eight innings, but had another thrilling comeback up their sleeve. With two outs and runners on the corners in the ninth Seth Loman sent the first pitch he saw through the right side for a base hit scoring pinch-runner Kenny Williams Jr. and sending Justin Greene to third. On the very next pitch, Erik Morrison sent a bouncing ball to the right side that second baseman David Nick overran, allowing Greene to score and setting off a raucous mob scene on the infield.

Morrison would finished the night 3-for-4 as the Barons improved to 53-61 and 23-22 in the second half while Mobile continued their second-half free fall dropping to 57-58 and 17-28 in the second half.

The Barons will look to carry their recent momentum to road as they travel to Mississippi to take on the Braves in a five-game set starting Wednesday. RHP Andre Rienzo (4-1, 2.93) takes the hill in game one against LHP Brent Leach (0-4, 3.34). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM CDT.
