Mississippi Braves News Release
Chattanooga, TN - Luis Nunez clobbered the first pitch of the eighth inning, leaving no doubt that the tie game was no more. His eighth home run of the season put the Lookouts ahead, eventually sending Chattanooga to a 3-1 win over the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday night at AT&T Field.
Mark Lamm threw the pitch, taking his fifth loss of the season. It was a game of missed opportunities and good under-pressure pitching for both teams, but the Lookouts took a lead late and the Braves (19-25; 49-65) had nothing left in the ninth.
Zeke Spruill started the game and pitched well. He finished with just a run on his record on seven hits in six innings, striking out four. Chris Reed for the Lookouts pitched a planned three innings, allowing a run on five hits, before Andres Santiago continued to hold the Braves over three innings of relief work.
Mississippi struck first in the top of the second. Jaime Pedroza singled against his former team and moved to second when Spruill was hit by a pitch. That set up Todd Cunningham, who singled home the run on a ball that glanced off Reed's leg and into centerfield.
But with the Braves ahead 1-0, the Lookouts wasted no time in tying it. In the bottom of the second, Jake Lemmerman doubled off of Spruill, his seventh double in five games, and scored two batters later on Brahiam Maldonado's single. The Lookouts had two on and nobody out but couldn't score again, so the teams were tied through two.
And they stayed that way--through an opportunity in the third for the Braves, with second and third with nobody out. They stayed that way through an opportunity for Chattanooga, bases loaded in the sixth with nobody out. Still they stayed tied until Nunez hit the home run to break the tie in the eighth.
Chattanooga scored another run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single for Nick Buss, making it 3-1. Steven Ames came on and shut the Braves down 1-2-3, despite a couple of hard hit balls snagged by his fielders. It was Ames 14th save of the season.
The loss ended the ten-game road trip 4-6 for Mississippi. Now the M-Braves try to bounce back at home as they take on the Birmingham Barons for five beginning on Wednesday at 7:00 PM CT. Left-hander Brent Leach (0-4, 3.34) toes the rubber against right-hander Andre Rienzo (4-1, 2.93). Fans can listen live on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com beginning at 6:30 PM CT with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch."
