For the third straight night, Williamsport mounted a comeback, but Friday's rally fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Aberdeen IronBirds.

Kyle Hoppy had a leadoff single in the ninth inning, but his teammates couldn't get him any farther.

Overall, the game was marred by missed opportunities for Williamsport. The Cutters stranded nine runners on base, including seven in scoring position and four on third base.

Williamsport fell behind early for the first time in six games. Starter Luis Gonzalez allowed two runs in the second, and two more in the third.

But just as the Cutters did the last two games, they didn't give up. Andrew Aizenstadt and Matt Sisto combined to pitch five scoreless innings and retired the last 13 IronBirds in a row.

The Crosscutters started the rally in the fifth. Hoppy doubled in Chace Numata to cut it to 4-1.

In the seventh inning, Hoppy doubled with Logan Moore on first base, but Moore was held up at third and stranded by Roman Quinn, who struck out.

In the eighth, Williamsport plated two runs, as Larry Greene brought home Mitch Walding and Chris Serritella doubled in Greene. But again, Williamsport couldn't bring in the tying run as Yan Carlos Olmo struck out to end the inning.

Williamsport does take the series, however, over Aberdeen and starts a series with Connecticut at Bowman Field on Saturday. First pitch is at 7:05. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com.
