West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

BOWLING GREEN, KY - For the second night in a row, the Whitecaps loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but came up short in a 3-1 loss in Bowling Green. The Hot Rods completed a three game sweep of West Michigan behind starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter (10-4), who carried a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning to earn the win.

Bowling Green (23-13, 61-45) took the lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Jeff Malm. Josh Sale hit a solo home run in the second to push the lead to 2-0.

Tommy Collier (9-7) pitched the first three innings for the Whitecaps (18-18, 54-52) and allowed the first two Bowling Green runs. Brennan Smith, who was activated from the disabled list Monday, pitched three perfect innings of relief before Will Clinard gave up a run on three hits in the seventh.

The Whitecaps did not have more than one base runner in any inning against Carpenter until the ninth when Chad Wright drew a lead off walk and Brandon Loy followed with a double. Carpenter was replaced by Justin Woodall, who allowed an RBI single by Aaron Westlake that cut the lead to 3-1. A one-out walk by Jeff McVaney loaded the bases, but Jason King hit into a ground ball double play to end the game.

Westlake finished the game 2-for-4.

West Michigan was swept in a three game series for the first time since April 19-21 when Wisconsin took three in a row at Fifth Third Ballpark.
