Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (23-13, 70-35) pounded out another 18 hits and blew a seven-run lead, but held on late to down the South Bend Silver Hawks (18-18, 53-53) in a 9-8 win to complete a three-game series sweep on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Lansing took a 7-0 lead against South Bend starter J.R. Bradley thanks in part to a pair of two-run homers by Kevin Patterson (1-for-2) and Gustavo Pierre (4-for-5). Bradley could not record an out in the fourth inning after allowing 12 hits, giving up seven runs, walking one and striking out one.
The Silver Hawks began their comeback when they took advantage of an error in the fifth to score four unearned runs before Tom Belza hit a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Michael Crouse scored the decisive tally when South Bend second baseman Eric Groff committed a throwing error.
Kaleb Fleck (Loss, 2-1) allowed just one unearned run in two innings of work out of the Silver Hawks bullpen.
The Lugnuts posted double-digit hits for the third consecutive game. Chris Peters recorded three hits in four at-bats. Chris Hawkins scored twice, drove in one run and tallied three hits in five at-bats. Kipp Schutz scored two runs and recorded two hits, including a triple, in five at-bats.
Aaron Sanchez started for Lansing, went five innings and gave up five runs, only two of which were earned. The righty allowed seven hits, struck out two and walked just one.
Phil Brua (Win, 2-0) tossed two scoreless innings and struck out a pair for the Lugnuts. Ajay Meyer (Save, 28) threw a perfect ninth inning to pull to within one of the Lugnuts' franchise record.
The Lugs head on the road for a four-game trip to take on the Dayton Dragons. The opener is Tuesday, July 31st at 7:00 p.m. with Noah Syndergaard (7-3, 2.90) on the mound for Lansing. James Allen (7-3, 3.43) will start for Dayton.
The Lugnuts return home to begin a seven-game homestand on Saturday, August 4th against the West Michigan Whitecaps featuring Classic Car Night and LAFCU Fireworks. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the Cooley Law School Stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
