Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MA - The Lowell Spinners have found their stride, playing fundamental baseball, getting phenomenal pitching and timely hitting, as they completed a three game sweep of the State College Spikes Monday night at LeLacheur Park, 2-1.
Lowell (16-26) broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when Mike Miller was hit-by-a-pitch with one out, stealing second. After a Deven Marrero fly out, Matt Gedman beat Spikes' starter Luis Heredia to the bag on an infield single as Miller raced around third. State College second baseman Jodaneli Carvajal's throw sailed into the Spikes' dugout, allowing Miller to score to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
State College (23-19) challenged the Spinners' record breaking scoreless innings streak a number of times, notably in the fourth inning when a Barrett Barnes fly twisted just to the left of the foul pole in leftfield, keeping the streak intact.
The Spikes broke the streak at 30 innings in the seventh inning, utilizing a safety squeeze. Chris Diaz was hit by a pitch with one-out, advancing to third on a single through the hole by Derek Trent. Yhonathan Barrios followed with the squeeze, fielded cleaning by Jacob Dahlstrand who opted to go to first, allowing Diaz to score, knotting the score at one.
The Spinners responded in the bottom half of the inning however, playing fundamental baseball of their own against State College reliever Dalton Friend. Aneury Tavarez legged out an infield single to start the inning, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Oscar Perez. Miller followed with a single up the middle, scoring Tavarez and giving the Spinners a lead they would not relinquish.
There was a bit of drama in the ninth inning, as with one out State College first baseman Sam Gonzalez hit a towering blast down the left field line. Home Plate umpire Sam Vogt ruled the ball foul, and despite protests from the Spikes, the call held. Gonzalez would walk, but Diaz grounded into a double play to end the game.
The win concluded a very successful six-game homestand for the Spinners, who finished the stay 5-1, winning the final four games. The pitching staff was spectacular, as the 30 inning scoreless streak broke the previous mark of 25 set by the Spinners in 2011.
Pat Light started, striking out four while allowing just one hit over two innings. Dahlstrand (2-2, 3.44) picked up his second consecutive win, allowing one run on three hits and two walks, striking out one in five innings. Braden Kapteyn picked up his second save of the season, dodging the Gonzalez close call, striking out two over two hitless innings.
Miller led the Spinners offense with a two-hit night, adding an RBI and scoring a run. Mookie Betts and Kendrick Perkins also added two hit nights, while Gedman and Tavarez each had one hit.
The Spinners have Tuesday off, though they will be on the road as they begin a six-game road trip through Jamestown and Staten Island. Lowell is red hot, winning 7-of-9 games, improving their record to 16-26.
