Arkansas Travelers News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Seven Traveler hits over the sixth and seventh innings of Thursday night's game between the Arkansas Travelers and Springfield Cardinals resulted in six runs over the two frames and were enough to propel the Travs to an 8-4 comeback win, giving them the series victory over the Cardinals.
The Travs (17-16, 44-59) were coming off of a 13-7 loss to the Cardinals (22-10, 57-45) a night ago, and fell behind to the Cards in the first inning when Jamie Romak singled to right field to score leadoff man, Kolten Wong. That early lead would not stand long, however, as one of the newest additions to the Travs roster, Paul McAnulty (1), belted a solo homerun to lead off the top of the second inning. Later in that inning, the Travs would take a lead of their own as Alberto Rosario's groundout scored Casey Haerther, who doubled two batters earlier.
A bases-loaded threat by the Cardinals in the next half inning would yield only one run as Travs starter Orangel Arenas (4-7) was able to work around the three walks and hit he surrendered in the inning. The Cardinals initial bases loaded opportunity came with no outs as Arenas began the inning with a walk to Jose Garcia, a single allowed to Audry Perez, and a walk to Adam Melker. The Cards first stab at a run went for not as Wong's fly ball to Ryan Mount in left field was not deep enough for J. Garcia to attempt to score. J. Garcia would score, however, on the next play as Greg Garcia grounded out to Renny Osuna for the second out of the inning. An intentional walk to the Cards' Oscar Tavares loaded the bases for the second time in the inning, but a fielder's choice of Romak kept the game tied at two-all and ended any further Cardinal threat in the second.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Cardinals broke through for a pair of runs on three hits and took a 4-2 lead. The fifth-inning rally was enough to knock Arenas out of the game after he was able to record one out in the inning. Travs reliever Mike Piazza would come on and allow a single to the first man he faced to score the Cardinals second run of the inning, but Piazza induced an inning-ending double play on the next batter faced.
Piazza then found himself in line for the win a half inning later as the Travs rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead. The go-ahead inning was highlighted by a two-out, two-run homerun by Jimmy Swift (2). Prior to Swift's bomb, the Travs had platted a run on a Seth Maness (8-2) wild pitch that scored Osuna.
The Travs then extended their lead to 8-4 as they matched their sixth-inning scoring output with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Following a strikeout of Travis Witherspoon to lead off the inning, the Travs would load the bases with a pair of singles and a walk against Deryk Hooker, who started the inning in relief of Maness. With the bases loaded and one out, Roberto Lopez collected a pair of RBIs as he singled to left-centerfield. A RBI single by Swift later in the inning would account for the Travs third run of the inning.
Staked to an 8-4 lead, the Travs bullpen would close out the game in dominating fashion as they allowed just two more Cardinal hits for the game.
Piazza is credited with the win and improves to 2-3. Maness takes just his second loss of the year against his eight wins. The time of game was 2:59 and was played in front of a crowd of 5,069.
The Travs continue their road trip as they will head to Springdale, Ark. to take on Northwest Arkansas for a four-game set beginning on Friday, July 27th. First pitch of the opening game against the Naturals is scheduled for a 7:05 first pitch.
