Eight-Run Third Pushes Goldeyes to Big Win

July 21, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It took nearly three and a half hours for the Winnipeg Goldeyes to soundly defeat the Sioux Falls Pheasants.

In the game that lasted 3:24, the Goldeyes doubled the Pheasants to the tune of 14-7 Saturday night in front of 3,110 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The win moves the Goldeyes within a game of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for first place in the North Division and Winnipeg remains three and a half games up on the Kansas City T-Bones and Amarillo Sox in the wild card race.

The game turned in the third inning when Winnipeg scored eight times on six hits to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Kyle Day, Amos Ramon and Yurendell de Caster all drove in two runs in the inning, as the Goldeyes sent 12 men to the plate.

The Pheasants tried to stage a comeback with five runs in the fifth inning, but the Goldeyes shut the door with two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Chris Roberson had a massive night, going five-for-six at the dish with three RBI. He had two triples to tie a team single-game record and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

On the mound, Rich Hawkins allowed six runs over four and two-thirds innings. Dexter Carter then came in for Winnipeg and tossed two-thirds of an inning. However, it's Brian Beuning and his three and two-thirds innings of scoreless work that get him the win.

Sioux Falls starter Mark Michael lasted just three innings and takes the loss. He gave up nine runs on seven hits.

The Goldeyes will go for their 11th series win of the season tomorrow. Matt Rusch (5-2, 2.58) will start for Winnipeg, while Sioux Falls will counter with Alan DeRatt (3-4, 5.46).

Coverage on TSN 1290 begins at 3:30 p.m. with 55 with Forney. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
