July 21, 2012 - American Association (AA) News Release

El Paso 9, Lincoln 8

Trailing 8-3, entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Diablos looked to have little chance of taking the win. It seemed no one told the El Paso batters that though, as the home team scored six runs in the frame to earn a 9-8, walkoff victory. Leadoff SS Maikol Gonzalez drove in the winning run on a single - his fourth hit of the night. Gonzalez - who tied for the game high in hits with Lincoln LF Stephen Holdren - scored two runs in addition to his decisive RBI. The Saltdogs took a 6-2 lead in the sixth thanks to a five-run frame, the final three scores coming with two outs. And despite putting up two security runs in the top of the ninth, the Saltdogs just couldn't nold off the Diablos in the end.

New Jersey 6, Gary SouthShore 5 (Game 1 - 10 innings)

The Jackals and RailCats played three extra innings in Game 1, and while the clubs combined for 22 hits, it was baserunning that proved to be the deciding factor. After his first hit of the game - a two-out single in the 10th - SS Matt Nandin stole second, turning a pedestrian Chris Henderson single into a walkoff hit for the catcher. It was Henderson's second hit of the game and his first RBI. The RailCats jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. But from that point on, 1B Francisco Caraballo and the rest of the Jackals put on a feverish comeback to win the extra-innings contest. Caraballo went 3-for-4, scoring twice and batting in three runs. For the RailCats, leadoff LF scored two runs to highlight a 2-for-4 night.

Gary SouthShore 3, New Jersey 0 (Game 2 - Suspended - Top 7)

Game 2 between Gary SouthShore and New Jersey was suspended in the top of the seventh due to local curfew with the RailCats on top, 3-0.

Winnipeg 14, Sioux Falls 7

The Goldeyes scored eight runs in the top of the third inning, jumping out on top early and eventually defeating Sioux Falls, 14-7. Winnipeg CF Chris Roberson hit two triples, two singles and a double and fell a home run shy of the cycle. In the end, Roberson went 5-for-6 with three runs and three RBI. Roberson led all players in hits as one of six Goldeyes with multiple base knocks. Only three Pheasants batters registered two or more hits, with CF Jared Bolden leading the way with a 3-for-4, one-run night. Bolden's performance at the plate, however, was not enough to pull Sioux Falls back into the game.

Amarillo 4, Laredo 1

The Sox scored three runs in the first inning Saturday night against Laredo, and starting pitcher Justin Garcia threw a solid 6.1 innings to defeat the Lemurs, 4-1. Garcia allowed just one run on eight hits for the night with two walks and two strikeouts. With the win, the Las Vegas native sits at 6-1 on the year with a 4.17 ERA. At the plate for the Lemurs 3B Anthony Scelfo hit his third triple of the year, going 2-for-4 with a run scoredd. No Sox batter had more than one hit, but Amarillo took advantage of nearly every scoring opportunity to take the win.

Grand Prairie 8, Kansas City 4

The AirHogs scored three runs in each of the first two frames against Kansas City on Saturday, then pushed across one run in both the third and fourth innings, eventually taking an 8-4 victory. Grand Prairie C Zane Chavez hit his 14th two-bagger of the season, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Chavez was joined in the multi-hit club by teammate Keanon Simon. But it was Kansas City 1B Hunter Mense who led all players in hits. Mense went 3-for-4, two of his base knocks being doubles, scored a run and batted one in. The early Grand Prairie advantage, however, was too much for Mense and the T-Bones to overcome.

St. Paul 7, Sioux City 6

The Saints scored five runs in the eighth inning against Sioux City on Saturday, turning a 6-2 deficit into a 7-6 victory. St. Paul 1B Ole Sheldon batted in two runs and scored twice as one of four Saints with two hits. Sheldon was the only Saint, however, with a home run, his 15th of the year. Sioux City had five men with multiple hits, including RF Mike Bisenius, who went 2-for-4 and scored twice. The 7-6 final tally was St. Paul's first lead of the game but in the end the only advantage that mattered.

Wichita 6, Fargo-Moorhead 1

Wichita got seven strong innings from starting pitcher Josh Lowey, and the Wingnuts offense gave the hurler plenty of run support, leading to a 6-1 Wichita victory. Lowey struck out four while allowing only one run on six hits and two walks, lowering his season ERA to 3.45. At the plate, Wingnuts LF Gerardo Avila hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot that turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead Wichita would never give back. The RedHawks early, 1-0 advantage came thanks to a second-inning Marcos Rodriguez double. Rodriguez went 2-for-4 on the night and was the only Fargo-Moorhead player with more than one hit.
