Miners Drop Close One to Washington

Marion, IL - The Washington Wild Things defeated the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park 3-1. Miners starter David Harden (6-3) threw seven innings in earning his third loss of the season. He gave up seven hits and three runs. He walked one batter and struck out four. Washington Wild Things starter Gary Lee (4-3) pitched eight strong innings in his win tonight. He gave up one run off seven hits and struck out three. He also walked one batter.

Washington took an early lead off David Harden with a two out, two RBI base hit by Wild Things catcher Rick Devereaux in the top of the first inning to give the Wild Things a 2-0 lead. The Miners scored one run off Gary Lee in the bottom of the first inning with a RBI ground out by Carlos Mendez to score Darian Sandford who singled and stole a base in the inning to cut the Wild Things lead to 2-1. That would be the only run the Miners would score all game.

The Wild Things added another run off Harden in the top of the sixth inning when second baseman Shain Stoner hit a two out base hit and RBI to bring in Rick Devereaux to give the Wild Things a 3-1 lead. Wild Things closer Steven Grife pitched the ninth inning. Ken Gregory led off the inning by getting on first base with an error by Dough Thennis. Will Block walked to move Ken Gregory to second base with two outs but the Miners failed to bring in any runs. Steven Grife earned his sixth save of the season and the Wild Things won the game 3-1.

Ryan Quigley pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Miners only giving up one hit. Gabriel Shaw pitched the ninth inning, striking out two batters in a scoreless effort.

With the loss, the Miners fall to 33-23 on the season. The Miners and Wild Things wrap up the three game set tomorrow at Rent One Park. First pitch is at 4:05 pm.
