Senators Sweep Baysox
July 6, 2012 - Eastern League (EL) Bowie Baysox
Bowie, Md. - The Harrisburg Senators (46-40) completed a three game sweep of the Baysox (42-44) at home with a 3-2 win Friday evening.Baysox runners had no trouble getting on base as at least one got on base in each of the first eight innings, but the offense hit 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and failed to take advantage of runners on third with less that two outs.
"We didn't execute too well with runners on third," said Manager Gary Kendall. "We had two opportunities and in a tight game they really become huge. You make contact in the middle of the diamond and you score two runs. Then we failed to get a bunt down so it was a little frustrating."
The Baysox struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Harrisburg starter Ryan Tatusko. With two outs, second baseman Buck Britton singled to left field and moved to second base when third baseman Zelous Wheeler singled to center field. Right fielder Ronnie Welty plated Britton with a single to left field that gave the Baysox a 1-0 lead.
Harrisburg took the lead in the top of the fourth inning against Baysox left-handed starting pitcher Rick Zagone. Tim Pahuta drew a one out walk and Jimmy Van Ostrand singled on a line drive that struck Zagone. On the first pitch after a short injury break, Zach Walters launched a three-run home run to center field to give the Senators a 3-1 lead.
"I had good control tonight and I was able to get some ground balls," Zagone said. "It just so happened I got the line drive off my chest and the guy put a good swing on the next pitch. That was really the only blemish I had and I felt good otherwise."
Bowie cut into the Harrisburg lead in the bottom of the seventh inning against Harrisburg reliever Pat McCoy. Center fielder Antoan Richardson drew a lead off walk, but was thrown out at second base when left fielder Josh Barfield reached on a force out. Barfield advanced to second base on a throwing error by second baseman Jeff Kobernus. Barfield stole third base and scored when designated hitter Robbie Widlansky reached on a throwing error with two outs to make the score 3-2. Harrisburg reliever Cory VanAllen replaced McCoy to finish the inning.
Zagone pitched five innings and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four batters and walking three in the loss. Baysox reliever Chris Petrini pitched four scoreless innings and allowed just three hits while striking out three batters.
Tatusko earned the win for Harrisburg, pitching five innings and allowing one run on six hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Harrisburg reliever Hector Nelo pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 11th save of the season.
RHP Eddie Gamboa (2-1, 2.21) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as they begin a three game series against the Akron Aeros. He will be opposed by RHP Steven Wright (6-5, 1.98).
The Baysox are home through Monday, July 9 for a six game homestand. The activities Margaritaville Night Saturday, July 7 starting at 6:35 p.m., a Baysox 20th Season Card Set Giveaway Sunday, July 8 starting at 6:05 p.m. and Camp Day Monday, July 9 starting at 11:05 a.m.
