LHP Mark Cohoon (3-7, 4.11) vs. LHP Mike Kickham (6-6, 2.81)

Game #85 - Friday, July 6, 2012

The Diamond - Richmond, VA - 7:05 PM

LAST GAME: Zack Wheeler struck out six and allowed just one run to lead the B-Mets past the Richmond Flying Squirrels by a 5-1 score last night The Diamond. The Binghamton offense collected 13 hits, went 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position and drove in three of their runs with two outs. Wheeler never allowed a runner to reach third during his time on the hill and did not issue any walks in his eighth win of the season. Richmond starter Chris Heston allowed a season-high five runs and matched a career-high by surrendering 11 hits. Armando Rodriguez inherited two runners from Wheeler in the eighth and allowed one to score, but came back and tossed a perfect ninth to secure the win.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mark Cohoon (3-7, 4.11) makes his 13th start as a B-Met and his 15th overall this season. The lefty recently returned from a two-start stint with the Buffalo Bisons (AAA). In two games, both against the Durham Bulls, Cohoon was tagged for 13 runs on 16 hits over eight innings. He went 0-1, struck out four, walked three and allowed an opponents' batting average of .400 in his time in the International League. Cohoon is searching for his first win overall since May 27 when he allowed one run over seven innings against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

LHP Mike Kickham (6-6, 2.81) makes his 17th start of the season. He comes off a win against the Akron Aeros on July 1. The Missouri native struck out seven over six shutout innings. It was the fourth time this season he has gone six innings or longer without allowing a run. In five starts in June, Kickham went 2-1 with a 1.84 ERA. He struck out 28 but also walked 16 in 29.1 innings, allowing a .190 opponents' batting average. Selected in the 6th round of the 2010 draft out of Missouri State University, Kickham is in his first season at Double-A. He pitched last season with the Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A) and skipped over High-A.

BAFFLING FORMER TEAMMATES: Zack Wheeler faced a San Francisco Giants affiliate for the first time since he was traded from the Giants to the Mets in exchange for Carlos Beltran in July 2011.

DELIVERING WITH MEN ABOARD: The B-Mets went 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position last night. It was the most hits they have collected with men in scoring position since they went 8-for-21 in an 11-5 win over the Erie SeaWolves on June 25. Three of their six hits came with two outs.

LIKE A NATURAL: B-Mets infielder Sean Kazmar, a veteran of 996 professional games, made just his third career appearance in the outfield last night, getting the start in right field. He made three putouts. Kazmar played two games in the outfield with the Portland Beavers (SDP: AAA) in 2010.

LONG TIME COMING: After a lengthy stretch of shaky outings from the B-Mets rotation, Zack Wheeler allowed just one run over 7.1 innings last night. It was the first time a B-Met starter has gone at least seven innings and allowed fewer than three runs since Cory Mazzoni tossed seven shutout against the Akron Aeros on June 20.

GET THE HITS AND THE WIN: The B-Mets pounded out 13 hits and racked up the win last night. Binghamton had previously lost their last three games in which they had reached double-digits in hits.

THE RUBBER MATCH: The B-Mets look for their eighth series win of the season and first since they took three of four from the Erie SeaWolves in late June. They have gone 3-3 in rubber matches this season.

A WIN AT THE DIAMOND: Last night the B-Mets won their first game at The Diamond since June 14, 2011.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets head to Altoona, PA for their final series before the All-Star Break. They take on the Curve for a three-game series starting tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the mound against RHP Kyle McPherson.
