Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Matt Curry was 4-for-5 with four RBI while Jarek Cunningham was 3-for-4 with two RBI to help lead the Curve to a series victory over the R-Phils with an, 11-5, win on Friday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Altoona initially trailed 4-0 in the game before scoring 11 unanswered runs to run away with the finale.
The Curve offense went to work to erase an early 4-0 deficit, grabbing the first of their 11 unanswered runs in the second inning. Curry doubled to start the frame and came home two batters later when Jeremy Farrell doubled him in to make it a 4-1 R-Phils lead.
That lead was completely erased in the third as the Curve sent 10 men to the dish and scored five runs on six hits. It began with a single by starter Matt McSwain (4-2) and continued with a Robbie Grossman single and a walk to Brock Holt. With the bases loaded, Oscar Tejeda smacked a single through the left side to bring McSwain in and the Curve were within two.
It was a single by Curry that followed and tied the game as it brought home Grossman and Holt. Ramon Cabrera came to the dish with no one out and runners at first and second and put down a sacrifice bunt to move everyone up 90 feet. Farrell's RBI groundout that followed broke the deadlock and gave Altoona its first lead of the night at 5-4. Cunningham followed with the first of his three hits that scored Curry from third and placed the Curve ahead by two at, 6-4.
The TCU product Curry added to a stellar night in the fourth when he homered with two down to make it, 8-4. It was all Curve from there as McSwain went on to finish five innings and allow just the four runs (three earned) to earn his second win in as many starts. Altoona's offense stayed hot throughout the rest of the night, scoring once more in the sixth on a Tejeda RBI triple and then twice more on back-to-back homers by Cunningham and Quincy Latimore in the seventh.
All told the Curve offense scored 11 runs on 14 hits to defeat the R-Phils on Friday night. Grossman finished the night 1-for-3 with a pair of walks to run his consecutive games-on-base streak to 20 games, which is second-best on the team this season behind Holt's 22-game streak from June 2-26. The four hits for Curry tie a career high while his four RBI are one shy of his career-best of five.
Altoona's bullpen duo of Logan Kensing and Kris Harvey, who was activated off the DL prior to the game, combined for four innings of one-run ball to seal the win for McSwain.
Back to within a game of .500, the Curve (42-43) will welcome in the Binghamton Mets for a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday night. Chainsaw-juggling comedian Mad Chad will be in the house on Saturday night to entertain the fans in attendance on a Curve, Pa. Blue Out Saturday, which raises awareness and funds for Prevent Child Abuse, Pennsylvania. Saturday night also serves as the second Scout Night of the season and after the game kids can once again run the bases.
Taking to the hill in the series-opening contest for the Curve will be RHP Kyle McPherson (1-2, 4.76), who defeated the B-Mets in his first start of the 2012 season a few weeks ago in Binghamton. He'll be opposed on the mound by Mets starter RHP Cory Mazzoni (1-2, 6.35), who is making his second straight start against the Curve.
Gates for the opening tilt will swing open at 6 p.m. while airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets and more information on the current Curve homestand, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the box office at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
