Pelicans Win Fifth Straight, 8-4
July 4, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Myrtle Beach Pelicans
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, extended their season long winning streak to five Wednesday, beating the Winston-Salem Dash 8-4 at BB&T Ballpark. The game was decided in the second inning when the Pelicans loaded the bases with no score and two outs. Teodoro Martinez came through to break the deadlock with a two run double to the leftfield corner.
Odubel Herrera then walked to reload the bases ahead of an infield single from Hanser Alberto to score two more runs for a 4-0 lead. It was 8-0 after a single from Brett Nicholas and an error to put Christian Villanueva on for the second time in the frame.
The six run inning is the most productive one of the season for Myrtle Beach, topping five runs, accomplished five times previously.
Myrtle Beach added two runs of insurance in the sixth when the first four batters hit against reliever Ryan Buch.
Winston-Salem did stage a late comeback, however, scoring three times in the sixth to move within four at 8-4. The Dash then stranded the bases loaded in both the seventh and eighth innings before being dispatched easily by closer Ben Rowen in the ninth.
Randol Rojas earned his team leading seventh win, going five innings and allowing one run. Jake Petricka fell to 4-5 with the loss. The save was Rowen's fifth.
Myrtle Beach has now won five straight games and is 11-3 to begin the second half. Luke Jackson throws for the Pelicans Thursday for a 7:00pm first pitch. For more information head online to MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
