Frederick Keys News Release
Having trailed by as many as four runs, the Keys battled all the way back capping a big rally in the ninth inning as CF Trent Mummey hit a three-run home run to push Frederick to a 6-4 Independence Day win. The ninth inning blast pushed the Keys past Potomac in the opening game of their three-game series.
Down 4-3 in the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Travis Adair worked a one-out walk to set the table. Then LF Johnny Ruettiger registered his fourth hit of the game with a line drive single slapped through the left side. Then Mummey stepped in. The high fly ball well over the right field wall was his second home run of the year and it pushed the Keys back to 7-7 in the second half of the season.
Frederick fell behind early after stranding the bases loaded in the top of the first inning. RHP Dylan Bundy struggled but limited the damage through four tumultuous innings. The National scored a run in each of the first three frames and stranded runners on second and third base in the fourth. Bundy allowed six hits and three runs in four innings throwing 83 pitches on the night.
Potomac extended the lead when Jason Martinson hit a long home run halfway up the light tower near the left field line to put the Nats atop 4-0. But Frederick would come back.
With two outs and nobody aboard in the sixth inning 1B Aaron Baker doubled to left-center field. DH Jeremy Nowak hit a hard groundball deflecting off the Nationals starter Nathan Karns for an infield single. Karns exited having thrown 99 pitches and RF Steve Bumbry repreted the feat, with a comebacker that alluded the grasp of reliever Matt Swynenburg. The infield hit scored Baker to make it 4-1. C Joe Oliveira walked to load the bases and 3B Mike Mosby singled two runners home with a hard base hit up the middle to make it 4-3.
Frederick got 3 and 1/3rd superb innings of relief from LHP Trent Howard. Howard (2-4) came on with two down in the sixth inning and stayed on through the ninth inning to get the win.
Frederick returns home Thursday, July 12th for the annual 50-Cent Hot Dog Night. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. For tickets contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
